Pottery is one of the oldest arts developed in Crete from 3000 BC first Minoan times and is associated with the creation of products based on the four elements of the nature: earth, water, air and fire.
The village of Margarites consist of, unquestionably the most important pottery center of west Crete. In the area there are plenty of clay deposits which explain the long occupation of the residents with this art.
The workshops on the village of Margarites was built outside the village on the south side, maybe because from there was easier access to raw materials. The old name of these workshops was “tsikalaria” and each individual workshop called “tsikalario”.
